My Sister's Hummus

One of my favorite people in the world, my sister, recently posted her recipe for hummus on her blog. We made it during our sleepover this week and it was so. good. So good.

I've been snacking on it with snap peas and naan as much as my little, dieting heart desires. :)

Here ya go!

our sun dried tomato hummus.
Hummus Recipe:

1 can chickpeas/garbanzo beans -- drained
freshly squeezed juice from 1 lemon (approx. 1/3c of lemon juice...or to taste)
1/3 c of tahini
1/3c olive oil (may need more if it's too dry/thick after blending)
3-4 crushed cloves of garlic -- or more, shortly warmed on the stove (w/ olive oil) for extra potency this is the beginning point.

using a food processor, blend all ingredients & then, if lemon & garlic don't do it for you,
get creative with the flavors!

i always add:1tsp cayenne pepper -- give or take a little...usually give :)
lots of pepper
a little mrs. dash
some oregano
1/2 can sun dried tomatoes or roasted red peppers (which adds a little moisture = less olive oil)sometimes a little more lemon juice
& maybe a little sugar (like...a TINY bit)

blend together to desired consistency --i like it a little gritty, but some do not.i usually let it cool in the refrigerator & eat it on warm naan, on triscuits, with baby carrots, or spread onto a veggie sandwich!

Mmmm...

I have never had hummus and quite frankly, it scares me. Don't know why! I keep hoping at some point I'm somewhere and have the opportunity to try it without having to make it incase I don't like it...is it able to be compared to anything. Like...."It tastes similar to...."

Oh, Katie, it's sooo good. I think you'd love it.
One thing I have to warn you about: it's very easy for mass manufacturers to get hummus terribly wrong. So get a really good batch made at Whole Foods or something. I don't want you to try it and hate it b/c you got nasty kind.
It's kind of gritty - which is how I like it. But the texture isn't a problem to me and I'm a texture FREAK.
You HAVE to try. It's a great thing to use as a dip or spread and it's waaay less calories than something milk based (much more healthy, too).
Let me know if you try it or make it.

Katie.. You will love it! It is especially good on panini's, which I know you love.

Whole Foods has a great Red pepper one. Don't ever get the commercial brands, they are full of fat, which is absolutely not necessary in hummus. They should be less than 2% fat. We have a brand here called Helen's, which is pretty good and then there is Bobbi's, which is also good but higher in fat.

My favorite store-bought hummus is Kalamata Olive Hummus or Chipotle Hummus from Trader Joes. Lots of flavor, low in fat and tastes fresh :)

the whole foods hummus is one of the only kinds I've had store bought that is any good.

and if you puree the chickpeas you can get it pretty smooth...zero grit. I hate grit personally, I like my hummus to be really creamy smooth.

I need to try this recipe!
